Deepen your practice through extensive study of Yoga’s Greatest Hits!!

Whether you are a seasoned yogi who wants to take time out to study and rediscover your practice or a newbie looking to try yoga for the first time, our Back to Basics program will expand horizons as you explore your personal practice. Our cohesive series breaks down yoga’s most popular asanas in a workshop-type setting with straightforward instruction and light discussion encouraging students to ask questions in order to gain a better understanding of particular poses. Topics covered include standing poses, balance, hip openers, twists, back bending poses and restorative yoga. See details below...

Week 1: Standing Poses
Standing poses are some of the most efficient postures in Yoga. Here we will concentrate on multiple poses utilizing Tadasana (Mountain Pose) as our primary focus. All poses, standing, sitting or supine depend on mastering Tadasana. It is essential to understand this pose in order to learn the meaning of balance and feel grounded before moving further. In addition, standing poses are an effective way to increase range of motion in the hip joints, shoulders and legs.

Week 2: Balancing Poses
Balancing poses are known to greatly improve concentration, balance, and coordination. Here we will practice on poses that cultivate stability, stillness and a deeper sense of focus while developing muscle tone.

Week 3: Hip Openers
The hip joint is the meeting place for the lower and upper half of the body. Without mobility in your hip joint there is greater cause for injury to your knees and lower back. In this class we will focus on moving from the hips to increase flexibility and enhance the full range of motion of this area while releasing tension on the lower back and hips.

Week 4: Twisting Poses
With it's many benefits of releasing tension and strengthening the muscles of the spine and neck, twists are also an excellent aid to detoxify and cleanse our internal organs. We will practice this "squeeze-and-soak" action to remove toxins and improve digestion by compressing the internal organs and allowing fresh blood to flow freely.

Week 5: Backbends
Almost all our daily activities bend the body forward -working at the computer, driving, cooking and cleaning. This repetitive action causes the spine and shoulders to round forward while the muscles in the back become tight -restricting the ability of the neck, shoulders and chest. In this class we will reverse this effect by releasing and opening the heart, lungs, chest and shoulder joints through gentle back bending.

Week 6: Restorative Yoga
Restorative classes focus less on stretching and toning but concentrate on relieving stress and releasing physical and mental tension. These gentle poses with static holds allow the body to renew and heal by calming the nervous system, lowering the heart rate and blood pressure while boosting the immune system. This class will focus solely on the relaxation of the body through restful poses and minimal movement.

About Dani Crisafulli
Danielle Crisafulli has spent the majority of her career working in the high-stress fast-paced environment of the music industry. Yet, the demands of her job and the intensity of her projects soon took their toll on her body. In 1998 Danielle’s struggle with asthma had become so severe that her acupuncturist recommended that she add a regular yoga practice to assist her healing. Upon taking her first class she knew immediately that the benefits would be outstanding and that yoga would now play an important role as part of her daily lifestyle. Nine years later-- completely asthma free-- she chose to follow her yoga path and graduated with a 500 hour yoga teacher certification from YogaWorks, NYC. While there she concentrated her studies around Iyengar, Ashtanga, Vinyasa, Ishta and Hatha Yoga. Her teaching style culminates the best of each practice cultivating safe, sensible thematic sequencing with the use of asana, hands-on adjustments, modification of postures and props.
