Yoga For Runners

Training for the Country Music marathon? By now you’ve probably heard the buzz surrounding yoga and how beneficial it can be for your performance, but did you know that:

•	50-70% of runners are likely to sustain at least one running related injury throughout their careers. Research suggests that the regular practice of yoga reduces running injuries by around 25 percent.
•	Most running injuries are overuse and improper form, affecting the knee, leg, ankle and foot. A tight muscle is brittle, hard, and inflexible. Because muscles act as the body's natural shock absorbers, ideally they should be soft, malleable, and supple, with some give. Brittle muscles, on the other hand, cause the joints to rub and grind, making them vulnerable to tears. Yoga focuses on balance, flexibility, and proper alignment, and can relax and elongate the muscles.
•	Tension is another athlete's downfall, and breath awareness is the key to reducing it. Improving VO2 Max (aerobic capacity) is vital for running and racing success. With pranayama (breath work) and asana (yoga posture) conditioning, you can maximize the size of your lung capacity and the quantity of freshly oxygenated blood coursing through your body.
•	Long distance running requires stamina. You learn through the practice of yoga that each day is distinct, much like each run. Your energy levels fluctuate daily, even hourly. Yoga improves your sense of your reserves.
•	Yoga is based on quieting the demands of the body and allowing the strength of the spirit to come through!!!

Come and see how yoga can improve your performance and reduce your risk of injuries in the race!!

About your Instructor Brooke Cawthon
Brooke took her first yoga class in 2001 at the College of Charleston in Charleston, SC.  Since that first class, she practiced intermittently until her move to Nashville a few years ago. It was then she began to realize the depth of yoga’s benefits and began to focus more on her practice. Fascinated by the spiritual aspect of yoga and in pursuit of a deeper understanding of yogic philosophy, Brooke became a Certified Yoga Teacher through the Asheville Yoga Center in Asheville, NC.  She desires to share the gift of yoga by making it enjoyable and approachable for all. Brooke joined our staff in November 2008.
